I drew this coloured pencil portrait (a close crop, to showcase those amazing eyes) at a substantial 50x35cm – firstly to make the most of all that gorgeous detail, but also to create a dramatic, slightly intimidating statement piece that will command attention and become the focal point of almost any setting.
Also known as the Eurasian Eagle Owl, the European Eagle Owl is the largest owl species in the world, and is easily recognisable from the ‘ear’ tufts and piercing yellow or orange eyes. Eagle Owls are found in mountainous areas and coniferous forests throughout Europe and Russia, and through the Himalayas to China, with a varied diet that includes other birds, rodents, and fish, they can even tackle small deer.
Whilst there thought to be a handful of breeding pairs in the UK, the Eagle Owl is not considered a native British species. However, it is familiar sight in captivity, where they may live longer than 40 years, and a well-loved highlight of falconry displays due to its size, beauty, and temperament.
