Frequently asked questions. Everything you need to know about pet portraits

Pet Portrait FAQ

There’s a lot of useful information on this website about pet portraits, such as: how to commission a portrait of your cat, dog, or horse; how much pet portraits cost; and how to take a great photo of your pet. Here, in one place, is a quick summary of all the things I’m often asked and links to help you find more in-depth information if you need it.

If you have any further questions, just drop me a line using the contact form at the bottom of this page and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

Commissioning a Portrait of Your Pet or Horse

How do I commission a pet portrait?

It’s easy to commission a portrait of your cat, dog, or horse. The first step is to drop me a line – either using the contact form below, e-mail angie@angiewallacefineart.com, or call 07909 543312. Let me know what you would like drawn, and roughly what size, and I’ll get back to you with what further information I need. Visit this page for full details of how to commission a pet portrait.

How much do pet portraits cost?

Portrait prices vary depending on size and complexity – essentially, they’re based on how long it takes to draw. Below is a quick guide, but you can find more details about how much pet portraits cost here.

How long is your waiting list?

I generally work maintain an order book of about 6 months. If you have a particular deadline in mind, let me know as I may be able to juggle some of my wildlife projects and squeeze you in.

How long does it take to draw a pet portrait?

Most portraits take around a week to draw. I’ll let you know when I’m about to start and give you progress updates throughout.

What materials do you use to create my portrait?

I use only the finest quality materials to ensure your portrait gives you many years of enjoyment. Generally, the pet portraits on this website that have white backgrounds have been drawn with coloured pencils, and the portraits with coloured backgrounds have been drawn with pastels. There are many brands available, which suit slightly different applications. For more comprehensive details, please see the links below:

Can I see the progress of the portrait?

Yes. If I have your permission to post progress on my social media pages, then that will be the best place to keep track of how your portrait is coming along. Otherwise I can e-mail you an update each day.

Can you draw multiple pets on the one portrait?

Yes – portraits featuring two or three pets can look fantastic. Generally, this will result in a larger and more complex portrait which will impact the price, although a double dog portrait will be slightly cheaper than two separate portraits for example. I wouldn’t usually go beyond three subjects as it will result in each of them being quite small, but I am always happy to discuss, and I can show you some examples of how I have tackled this in the past with up to five pets.
If your reference photos don’t show the pets together, that’s fine – I can combine separate photos, but they would ideally be taken from a similar perspective and lighting conditions. I will always provide you with a mock-up to approve before I start work.

Can you add or remove items in the portrait?

Of course. This is something I will discuss quite early on in the process. For example, do you want to remove your dog’s lead or harness, or perhaps your horse’s bridle if they appear in the photograph. It is fairly straightforward to do this, although I may require some additional photographs to ensure I accurately reproduce what is hidden in the main photo. For many pet portraits, it can be fun to include a favourite ball or toy, so I’m always happy to keep them in.

Can you change the background of my pet portrait?

Yes. I draw most of my pet portraits with either a white background or a neutral colour, which helps keep the focus on your pet. This gets rid of any unwanted elements, so it really doesn’t matter if your chosen photo has a background that you don’t like. However, I can leave it in or even create something if you want your pet or horse to appear in a favourite location perhaps.

What size should my pet portrait be?

This is one of the earliest considerations, and you probably already have a rough size in mind if you know where you want to hang your portrait. I have more details on pet portrait sizes here, but you will also need to think about:
cost – larger portraits will cost more
– detail – larger portraits will have a lot more detail, but if I only have low resolution photos to work from, it can sometimes be better to go for a smaller size. Read more about choosing the right photo for pet portraits here.
– multiple subjects – if you have more than one subject in the portrait, then you will need to go larger in order to keep enough detail in each.

Website & Social Media

Can I Opt Out of Having My Portrait Shown on Your Website or social media?

Of course! I love drawing your pets, and I’m proud of the work that I do, and it’s an important part of promoting my business; so I’m keen to show your portraits off. But I will always respect your privacy and your wishes. I usually ask at the time of booking if it’s something you’re comfortable with.
Pet and horse portraits make wonderful gifts, so I’m especially sensitive when it comes to promoting my work around Christmas time for example. Often customers ask that I keep their portrait under wraps until the special event has passed, then they’re happy for me to display it, which I can certainly accommodate.

I also often find that my Facebook and Instagram audiences are so kind and enthusiastic, that posting your portrait online generates such lovely comments that pet owners really enjoy reading through all the responses.

Can I post a copy of my portrait on my social media pages?

Of course! When you commission a pet or horse portrait drawn by me, you own the artwork and you’re free to do whatever you want with it. If you’re happy linking back to my profiles or website, I’d be really grateful as it helps my business, but there’s no obligation.

Reference Photos

Can you draw/paint my pet from a photo?

Yes, I always work from photos. Even when I get the chance to meet the dogs, cat, and horses that I draw, I take photos and use them as the basis of the portraits

How many photographs do you need to draw my pet?

I usually work from one favourite photo, but it’s always useful to have additional pictures that show hidden or missing details, or show more realistic colours if the main photo was taken in unusual lighting conditions.

Can you use a poor quality photo to create my pet portrait?

Working to a very high level of detail means that I really need good quality photos (see more about choosing and taking photos of your pet here). Sometimes, particularly if an animal is no longer with us, I understand that it’s not possible to get a great photo. I’m happy to look at the photos you do have, and advise further as it’s sometimes possible to recreate elements. However, the bottom line is that the better the photo I work from, the better the portrait I can produce.

Payment

When do I pay for my pet portrait?

It costs nothing to add your name to my waitlist. To secure your booking, I take a deposit of around 25% – this is after we’ve agreed the details of your pet portrait and I’ve given you a firm quote for the total. The balance, including shipping charges, becomes payable upon completion – I’ll send you a photo of the finished portrait to ensure you’re happy with it first, then I’ll send it to you once the balance payment has cleared.

How do I pay for my pet portrait?

For UK customers, I can accept payments by bank transfer, PayPal, credit/debit card, or cheque. For overseas customers, bank transfer or PayPal seem to be the simplest methods. Let me know if you have any specific questions, and I’ll find out the answer.

Is my pet portrait refundable?

Ultimately I want you to be absolutely delighted with your portrait, and will do whatever it takes to ensure it’s perfect for you. Also, I’ll only ever take the balance payment once you’re happy with the portrait. As a last resort, I’d certainly offer a refund but it has never happened yet!

Can I pay in different currencies?

Yes, you can pay in your own currency. When I provide a quote for overseas customers, I just use the day’s exchange rate to tell you what it would be in your own currency. Your bank or PayPal will convert it during the transfer so that I get paid in Sterling.

Packing and Delivery

How much will it cost to ship my pet portrait?

Shipping costs depend on the destination, size, and weight. In the UK, I use a 24hr service with DPD, Parcelforce, or DHL, and I normally quote £10 for delivery. If your portrait is particularly large or framed, I will need to quote separately, but it is likely to be around £15.
For overseas commissions, I will obtain a quote before I start work based on an estimated size and weight, so there won’t any surprises later on. Usually, pet portraits to the USA cost £30-£50 to ship, and to Europe will be about £20-£40.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, my pet and horse portraits adorn walls all over the world! As I’m based in the UK, most of my customers are closer to home, but I regularly send portraits to the USA, Europe, and Australia, as well as Canada and Singapore.

Can I track my order?

Yes, once your order is on its way, I will let you know and send you a link to track it online.

Will my portrait be insured?

Yes, I do apply insurance to my parcels, so your portrait is protected.

Which carriers do you use?

Will I have to pay customs charges and import duties?

If you’re outside the UK, then you are likely to be liable for customs fees and import duties. For my USA customers, this is rarely a problem as the exception limit is $800 and most pet portraits come in below that.

Care Instructions

How will I receive the portrait?

Your pet portrait arrives securely packed – mounted flat, not rolled, and ready for framing. I ensure that all portraits are beautifully wrapped with a personalised label which adds a nice touch if you are give the portrait as a gift.

Will my pet portrait be framed?

The majority of my pet portraits are supplied unframed, and I always recommend that you discuss your requirements with a professional framer for the best results – read more about framing pet portraits here. However, I can arrange framing if you would like me to – just let me know what sort of style and colour you are looking for and I will send you some options to consider.

How do I take care of my artwork?

When properly looked after, and pencil portrait will give you many years of pleasure. As well as mounting it in a good quality frame, I always recommend that you:
– avoid hanging your portrait in direct sunlight
– avoid extremes of temperature – in a conservatory for example
– avoid humid conditions such as a bathroom or kitchen

All around, working with Angie has been a fantastic experience. Besides her enormous talent, from the first contact I had with her, after seeing some of her work online, to receiving a beautiful completed drawing, the experience has been more than satisfying in every way. Most importantly, Angie's rendering of my best pal seems almost to have brought him back to life. I couldn't be more pleased.

I’ve followed Angie on Instagram for a long time and recently commissioned a beautiful portrait of my family dog, Bella, in a bluebell wood drawn in pastels. Angie has captured Bella perfectly and is incredibly talented. Angie is wonderful to deal with and worked with me to design the brief sending examples of ideas which was incredibly helpful. Angie is very responsive on email and sent me photograph updates throughout her work on Bella which was hugely appreciated. I was blown away by the portrait and can’t wait to gift it to my parents. I’d recommend Angie to anyone who is looking for a top quality portrait of their beloved pet. I’ll definitely be using Angie again in the future and recommending Angie to all of my friends and family!
